Pilgrimage to the
Holy Well at
Thornton in Craven

Article posted 11 Jun 2016

At Thornton in Craven (near Skipton) there is a little-known Holy Well dedicated to Our Lady. It dates back to Saxon times and was a centre for pilgrimage at around the time when the Holy House at Walsingham was first established. Each year there is an Annual Pilgrimage to the Holy Well - this year it is on Saturday 9th July. All are welcome to join us there for Mass and Sprinkling - full details are on the poster which you can download by clicking  here.

A Notable Service
Article posted 09 May 2016

The small village church of St Leonard's, Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry was visited last August by a Mystery Worshipper. The occasion was the Assumptiontide Devotion, and a rather glowing report of that service appeared on the website of the Ship of Fools. You can read the report at:
<shipoffools.com/mystery/2015/2908>
That act of worship, honouring Our Lady, clearly reached across any churchmanship-based divisions and pointed directly to Jesus. If you would like to visit that church and feel that same sense of worship, there is an opportunity on Thursday 26th May when all are invited to celebrate Corpus Christi. A notice giving details is available by clicking  here.

October Devotion
Article posted 6 Sep 2015

The Society of Mary held its National October Devotion in the North West this year, at the church of St James the Great, Haydock. An informative poster is available  here.  On the day, about a hundred souls gathered for worship. Bishop Philip North presided and gave an inspiring address reminding us of the church's responsibility to reach out and help all to flourish, whether church members or not. Music for the Mass was provided by the St Nicholas Singers accompanied by Michael Wynne, and it was stunningly beautiful. Altogether it was a memorable day of fellowship and worship. Some photographs taken during the day are to be found  here.  We are grateful to Fr Rodney Middleton and his congregation for providing venue and hospitality for this event - especial thanks to the members of the Walsingham Cell who provided a sumptuous lunch buffet!

May Devotion and Ward AGM
Article posted 7 May 2015

The May Devotion and Ward AGM this year took place at the church of St Thomas the Aposle, Liscard. Building works at St Hilda's Prestwich mean that our previously advertised venue was unavailable, so we are grateful to Fr Robert Nelson and his congregation for generously offering to host this event. An informative poster is available  here  and also the Agenda for the AGM is  here.

Each Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus and we see him depicted with his mother, Mary. But a mother is for ever, not just for Christmas.
The idea that God became a human being in order to rescue humanity has been a dominant theme of Christian teaching for centuries.
To be fully human demands that one should have a mother. The Christian churches down through the ages have agreed that when God chose to enter the human race a young Jewish girl became his mother.
The Society of Mary wishes to encourage Christians to pay proper respect to the girl who was willing to become the Mother of God. Not worship - that is reserved for God himself alone. Just honour and respect.
Do come and join us in that quest.

This Society was formed within the Church of England in 1931, but it welcomes members from any denomination. It arranges acts of worship to mark the major Marian festivals, organises pilgrimages, publishes literature, and generally seeks to tap into the rich tradition of spirituality surrounding Mary the Mother of God.

Festival of the Immaculate Conception

Article posted 2 Dec 2014
The Ward's Festival of the Immaculate Conception took place on Saturday 13th December. The venue for this was the church of St Catherine, Todmorden Road, Burnley BB10 4AB. The coldest night of the current year caused us some problems of transport, including ice and road closures, but over forty souls gathered for this festival. It was a splendid day. Fr Roger Parker, Hazel and members of the congregation made us all very welcome and prepared a delicious lunch. Fr Richard Oakley's sermon was excellent, and it was good to have Fr David Sutton giving Benediction. Mike Heppleston at the organ was inspirational as ever. As part of the Mass, two members were formally admitted to the Ward and the Society. Some photographs are available  here.

Our Lady of Grace
article posted 29 Aug 2013
Ipswich is well beyond the borders of the North West Ward, but at the church of St Mary at the Elms an ancient Shrine has been re-established. To mark Our Lady's Birthday there will be the annual Ecumenical Pilgrimage Walk - the Walk itself originally planned by Cardinal Wolsey for Our Lady's birthday, but which never took place as it poured with rain on the day, and then within a week or two he had fallen from grace and was out of office. It has now been revived as an Ecumenical venture, following the original route with stops to say the Rosary ending up at the site of the ancient Shrine, and thence to St Mary at the Elms where the modern Shrine is, for prayers and tea. For more information about this fascinating Shrine, please click  here.

Festival of the
Immaculate Conception

article posted 8 Dec 2012
On Saturday 8th December the parish church of St James the Great Haydock hosted the Society of Mary's Festival of the Imaculate Conception. If you'd like to see some photographs of the event, please click
  here.

Around a hundred members and friends assembled for Solemn Mass at 12 noon, at which the preacher was Fr David Sutton, SSC. He pointed out the risks involved by the organisers in selecting a preacher for this occasion who has great sympathy for the Eastern Orthodox view of the Immaculate Conception, as distinct from the more dogmatic view of the Western Church. His sermon was most thought-provoking and contributed signally to our act of worship. He has kindly made available the text of his sermon - please click here to download a copy.

After lunch there was a brief service of admission of new members. We were delighted to welcome no fewer than eleven new members to the Society of Mary! The Rosary followed, using the Scripture Rosary form customary at St James the Great, Haydock. The small but beautiful Lady Chapel was full to overflowing because nearly seventy people stayed for this and for the service of Benediction which followed. The Society wishes to express its gratitude to Fr Rodney Middleton, the ministry team at St James' and all the members of the congregation who worked so hard to welcome the Society and make this Festival possible. .

God, Rich in Mercy
Parish Event

Article posted 06 Mar 2016

This imaginative event took place at St Columba's Anfield, near Liverpool. Christians around the world have accepted the invitation of Pope Francis to celebrate 2016 as the Year of Mercy, and Fr Ray Bridson and his congregation invited all interested to join them in preparing for Holy Week with this day of celebration, which has as its central theme Ephesians 2.4-5
"But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ - by grace you have been saved"

A Youth Mass began the celebration at 7.30pm on Friday 18th March, and this led into an overnight vigil; Saturday morning featured ministries of healing, Bible study and Mass, with in the afternoon Scriptural Rosary followed by Benediction. A detailed programme is obtainable by clicking  here.

Annual Requiem
Ward Event

Article posted 07 Nov 2015

The Annual Ward Requiem was celebrated on Saturday 7th November on a morning most chiefly remembered for its torrential rain! The venue was the church of St Andrew, Burnley, and the Solemn Requiem Mass began at 11.30am. Perhaps it was the weather which affected the numbers in the congregation - under the circumstances to see upwards of two dozen souls in church was quite encouraging. We welcomed the Guild of All Souls joining us for this act of worship, and we were glad to incorporate the Vespers for the Dead, which is one of the Guild's liturgies. All present had the opportunity to place in remembrance their own departed loved-ones. Lunch was a sumptuous feast, and our thanks to Fr Hapgood-Strickland and his congregation for their kind hospitality. The Ward's Annual General Meeting was held on 5th May 2013 at the church of St Hilda, Prestwich. This meeting began at 4.30pm and there were 23 members present. 24 people offered their apologies. After a sumptuous feast provided by our gracious hosts at St Hilda's the Ward celebrated its May Devotion in their beautiful church. Our thanks go to Fr Croft and his parishioners for their hospitality, which was very much appreciated. Some photographs of the event may be found by clicking  here.

Lenten Devotion
16th February

article posted 17 Feb 13
Upwards of sixty members and friends gathered at St Michael’s, Ford Lane, Coppenhall, on Saturday 16th Februrary for our Lenten Devotion. The order of service used on that occasion is available: the file size is 900kB and it may be downloaded by clicking  here.
The Society is grateful to the Rector, Fr Charles Razzall SSC and his congregation for hosting this event in their beautiful church - the church website may be visited at
www.stmichaelscoppenhall.co.uk
The event began at 11.30am with the Lent Prose and Healing Ministry, at which the Address was given by Fr Rodney Middleton, Sub-Warden of the Guild of St Raphael. He spoke about his experience in the healing ministry and his conviction that this should be a consistent theme in all churches. He invited those present to come forward for the laying on of hands and for anointing, and in that ministry was assisted by members of the Guild of St Raphael from Haydock. If you'd like more information about the Guild of St Raphael, please click   here  to visit the Guild website, which explains its sacramental approach to this ministry.
---------
The Eucharist began with the Angelus and continued the theme of healing with Fr Rodney's second address.
---------
After lunch the congregation reassembled in church for the Stations of the Cross, followed by Benediction. But happily the afternoon's proceedings opened with a brief service in which seven new members were admitted to the Guild of St Raphael. We gladly welcome them!

Requiem
article posted 09 Nov 2012

We met on Saturday 3rd November at St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Eccles, Manchester, for our Annual Requiem Service. Under the impressive iconography of the east window we participated in the Angelus at 12noon, followed by Solemn Requiem Mass at which the preacher was Fr Stuart Evason. Those named in the Ward Chantry List were placed in remembrance at the Mass. Around forty members and friends were present, and many of us enjoyed a warming lunch after the service.
There are some photographs of the event, which you can access by clicking  here.
For a copy of the Order of Service please click  here  We were most grateful to Fr Ian Hall and members of his congregation for their hospitality and warm welcome.
